Skip Permits

If you need to place a skip on a public highway or verge, you may require a skip permit from your local council. Here’s what you need to know about skip permits, applications and keeping your skip safe.

How do Skip Permits work?

If you plan to place a skip on a public highway or verge, you will usually require a permit from your local council.

Most councils allow the skip hire company to apply for the permit on your behalf, although requirements can vary between councils. Your local council will be able to provide further information about permits and any specific requirements in your area.

Skip permits are generally valid for a set period and must be in place before the skip is positioned on a public highway. If a skip is placed without the required permit, it may be removed or impounded, potentially causing delays to your project.

If your skip is placed entirely on private land, such as a driveway, a skip permit is not normally required.

Permits can take several days to arrange, so please allow enough time when booking a skip that needs to be placed on a road or verge.

Skip Safety

Safety is a priority when positioning your skip. Wherever possible, we recommend placing skips on suitable private land, such as a driveway, rather than on a public highway.

If this is not possible and the skip needs to be placed on the road, a permit will usually be required. We can arrange the permit on your behalf where applicable.

Our aim is to position your skip safely while causing as little inconvenience as possible to neighbours, businesses, road users and pedestrians.

Safety measures

Our standard safety measures include:

  • Using visibility aids, such as cones or lighting, where required
  • Fitting reflective markers to the skip where necessary
  • Avoiding pavements, manhole covers, drains, grates and other utility access points when positioning skips

Customers should also ensure that:

  • Waste does not protrude from the sides of the skip
  • The skip is not overfilled
  • Waste is secured or covered where required to prevent spillage
  • Hazardous or prohibited materials are not placed in the skip

Enclosed Skips

Where appropriate, we can provide lockable enclosed skips to help prevent unauthorised access and provide additional security for your waste.

Enclosed skips can also help prevent waste from falling or blowing out and reduce the spread of dust, making them particularly useful for certain commercial and construction projects.
